Bells rang and hearts rejoiced as Archbishop Stephen Hero returned home to Edmonton – the Archdiocese where his priestly vocation began – to be installed as its eighth Archbishop. Ordained in Edmonton and later rector of St. Joseph Seminary, Archbishop Hero’s homecoming drew large crowds to St. Joseph’s Basilica to welcome one of their own back as chief shepherd. Formerly Bishop of Prince Albert, his installation marked both a new chapter for the archdiocese and a continuation of a life of service rooted in the local Church. His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo and Cardinal Thomas Collins were in attendance to celebrate this special occasion.

The installation rites began at the cathedral doors with the traditional knocking ceremony, followed by blessings, Indigenous drumming, and a smudging led by Elder Fernie Marty of Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, with First Nations and Métis leaders extending their welcome. Inside the Basilica, the Apostolic Letter of Appointment was proclaimed by the papal nuncio, and Archbishop Hero was led to the cathedra, symbolizing his pastoral and teaching authority.

In his homily, Archbishop Hero expressed gratitude and humility, crediting the faith of the people of Edmonton for shaping his vocation and sharing his hope to foster the life of Christ in the archdiocese. More than 900 people attended the Mass in person, with many more joining online, and the celebration concluded with a joyful reception – marking not just the installation of a new Archbishop, but a heartfelt homecoming filled with hope for the future.
