Cathedral restoration project recognized by Heritage Toronto

The restoration of St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica was recognized among the winners of the 2017 Heritage Toronto Awards, announced October 23.

St. Michael’s, along with Glenview Presbyterian Church, was recognized with an award in the Architectural Conservation and Craftsmanship category. The award recognized, in particular, the restoration work done on the cathedral nave and east chancel window. The rehabilitation project re-established the integrity of the original Gothic Revival design of the building, taking a balanced approach to meet the current needs of the church and its parishioners. +VG Architects were commissioned by the Archdiocese of Toronto as the architects for the project and Clifford Restoration Limited oversaw the craftspeople for the work.

The jury gave two honourable mentions to The Great Hall for its painstaking renovation into a unique event venue and Queen West hot spot, and Casa Loma for its massive revitalization project which took two decades to complete, breathing new life into one of Toronto’s most beloved landmarks.

More than 500 guests from Toronto’s city-building community attended the awards ceremony in Toronto, hosted by award-winning journalist Christopher Hume. In its 43rd year, the Heritage Toronto Awards recognize extraordinary contributions to the conservation and celebration of Toronto’s heritage.
